L-R: Craig Lensky, Martin Thompson.

Thorn Lighting is delighted to announce a double triumph at this year’s Highway Electrical Association (HEA) Awards, securing both the Lighting Project and Employee of the Year Awards.

The Project of the Year accolade celebrates Thorn’s innovative lighting solution for the Aykley Heads footpath in Durham, which combined cutting-edge technology with environmental sensitivity to provide safe and sustainable illumination. Meanwhile, the Employee of the Year award recognises the outstanding contributions of Martin Thompson, Thorn Lighting’s Product Manager for Outdoor Luminaires.

Award-Winning Lighting at Aykley Heads Footpath

Thorn Lighting’s Urba NightTune lanterns were instrumental in transforming Aykley Heads footpath, a popular Active Travel route near Durham Police Headquarters. With its focus on safety, sustainability, and environmental harmony, the project tackled the challenges of nocturnal wildlife preservation and light pollution.

Durham County Council installed 31 Urba NightTune lanterns, leveraging features such as adjustable colour temperatures, dimming regimes, and precise light control. The solution minimised environmental impact while enhancing safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Cllr John Shuttleworth, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for highways, community safety and rural communities, said: “The Aykley Heads project aimed to create safe and accessible active travel routes within Durham and forms part of our wider plans to encourage people to choose healthier and more environmentally friendly modes of transport. Our work with Thorn Lighting has supported this ambition by enabling us to create well-lit areas for walking and cycling in a way that saves energy and respects the nocturnal ecosystem.”

Celebrating Thompson Martin: A Lifetime of Dedication

With a career spanning over 40 years at Thorn Lighting, Martin Thompson is a pillar of expertise, innovation, and dedication within the business. His work has profoundly impacted customers, colleagues, and the wider lighting community.

Reflecting on Martin’s achievement, Karin Zumtobel, Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Zumtobel Group AG, said:

“Martin is ‘Mr. Thorn’. He knows our products inside and out, and he has been a dearly valued and respected member of the team for many years. As the perfect ambassador for Thorn Lighting, he had my vote a hundred times over for this well-deserved award.”

Paul Kilburn, Managing Director at Thorn & Zumtobel – UK & Ireland, adds, “It is truly a privilege to work alongside someone as talented, passionate, and genuinely kind as Martin, and I can think of no one more deserving of the HEA Employee of the Year award”.

Saurabh Pandhi, VP of Thorn Lighting, and Samantha Berry, Head of Outdoor Sales – UK & Ireland, were present at the awards to celebrate this landmark achievement with the team.

Paul comments: “Massive congratulations to Martin Thompson, Craig Lensky – project lead for the Aykley Heads Footpath, and the Thorn Lighting team for this outstanding achievement at the HEA Awards!”

Trailblazer in sustainable lighting design, Chiara Carucci, has been announced as a winner at the DarkSky Awards, recognising her commitment and passion for environmental protection.

The awards are run by DarkSky International to recognise dark sky advocates from around the world, who are working to protect the night from light pollution. Chiara was named as the first ever winner to receive the coveted ‘Wildlife Night Watch’ award. The accolade is awarded to individuals whose decisive actions have been instrumental in conserving and protecting terrestrial and/or aquatic wildlife species sensitive to artificial light at night.

Winners have to be able to demonstrate efforts such as restoring natural nocturnal conditions in protected areas by eliminating unnecessary lighting or implementing smart lighting practices on site.

The announcement was made as part of the virtual DarkSky ‘Under One Sky’ event, held on 9thNovember.  The event coincided with Chiara delivering a talk at the Tartu Observatory at the University of Tartu, focusing on light pollution and ecological lighting principles. The news of her award win was welcomed by attendees and the other speakers present.

Winning the Wildlife Night Watch Award is a testament to Chiara’s commitment to creating lighting designs that push boundaries to incorporate innovative solutions for conservation. Chiara’s projects exemplify her dedication to harmonising human progress with environmental preservation.

Chiara received multiple nominations naming her as a deserving winner of the Wildlife Night Watch award. In nominating her, Bianca Gortárez Hernández said, “Chiara’s forward-thinking approach to conservation is evident in her innovative projects, such as the pilot interventions for sea turtle nesting sites. Her designs prioritise the value of darkness, creating the right light at the right time to protect wildlife.

Chiara’s contributions not only meet but exceed the award’s criteria, showcasing her as a leader in wildlife conservation and sustainable lighting design.”

Complementing this, Katia Kolovea said, “Chiara’s leadership extends beyond her projects. She plays a crucial role for the Lighting Police; an initiative devoted to raising awareness about the adverse effects of poor lighting and light pollution. As a member of the advisory board, her guidance has been invaluable in shaping effective strategies and campaigns that have resonated with professionals and the public alike.”

On winning the award, Chiara said: “Being recognised by DarkSky International is a huge accomplishment, at such a fantastic period in my life.

I am continually grateful for the work of Annika Jägerbrand, Travis Longcore, Dr. Kellie Pendoley and all the others who conduct research on a daily basis. It enables us to be more conscious and informed in our professional activities, as we strive to protect our shared natural heritage.”

This prestigious award win comes shortly after the launch of Chiara’s new studio, Noctua – Cultural and Natural Heritage Lighting Design. Chiara launched Noctua as a bridge between research and practice, aiming to protect heritage while embracing the future.

Noctua aims to revitalise spaces by integrating cultural narratives with environmental responsibility, while ensuring conservation and social sustainability.

With this award, Chiara and Noctua are even more committed to pioneering sustainable lighting solutions that preserve and enhance the beauty of our world, both natural and cultural, for all living beings.

Jamie Clews of Newark-based electrical contracting business Derry Building Services has been recognised as one of the country’s leading electrotechnical and engineering services apprentices, after winning the coveted 2024 ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award during a ceremony held at Trinity House in London.

Jamie, who works for ECA member-firm Derry Building Services, was trained by leading apprenticeships provider JTL. After overcoming fierce competition from two other finalists, Jamie won prizes including £3,000 and an overseas study tour sponsored by industry manufacturer Thorn Lighting.

The two runners-up, who each won £2,000 and a state-of-the-art toolkit, are:

  • Drew Lattaway, of Maval Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Co. Ltd
  • Rheef Owen, of NG Bailey

Apprentice of the Year 2024 Jamie Clews of Derry Building Services said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Derry Building Services and the inspection and testing team who taught me everything I know today. I’m also grateful for my excellent training from JTL. I’d like to acknowledge how important this award is  for progressing my career and in my role as an electrical inspection and testing engineer.

I would encourage other apprentices to try their best and see how far they can go in this fast-moving and exciting industry.”

Derry Building Services Managing Director Mark Townsend said: “We are immensely proud of Jamie for being named this year’s ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year. Jamie has shown a level of professionalism, commitment and competency throughout his apprenticeship far beyond his years and is a credit to both himself and the industry. He has a very bright future ahead of him at DBS and we look forward to him continuing his development with us.”

ECA President Stuart Smith said: “All three finalists did remarkably well to reach the final judging stage, and doing so is a testament to themselves, their employers, and their training providers.

To win, applicants had to show the judges that they can be a role model for the next generation of engineering apprentices. There is always tough competition as the judges consider the most impressive entries, and so it proved once again this year.

My heartfelt congratulations go to Jamie and Derry Building Services, as he takes his next steps in a rewarding and exciting electrical career.”

Managing Director of Edmundson Electrical Mark Felber said: “Edmundson Electrical are passionate about encouraging young people to find a rewarding career in our industry, and are delighted to have sponsored for the last 49 years the industry leading ECA Edmundson Apprentice of the Year Award.

Many congratulations to Jamie for winning our 2024 final, and also well done to the other two finalists Drew and Rheef for making such an impressive start to their careers.”

Astera’s new LunaBulb product – launched in May – has won a coveted PLASA Award for Innovation, which was received during the association’s annual expo at Olympia in London, UK in early September.

This adds to its growing collection of accolades which has also recently included a Best of Show award conferred by film-tv-video at the EuroCine expo in Munich in July.

The PLASA Innovation judging panel commented that LunaBulb “combines a broad feature-set in a much-loved conventional aesthetic,” which clearly impressed as much as it has many Astera customers and users.

LunaBulb is also the first LED lighting product to win innovation/new technology awards at both a film expo and a staging/event tradeshow in two different countries.

It is one of the most lightweight professional luminaires ever created, weighing just 81 grams (0.179 lbs) and is incredibly versatile for indoor and outdoor use. Key features are DMX control, full-colour RGBMA and a CCT range from 1,750K to 20,000K and five inbuilt wireless technologies (CRMX, RDM, Bluetooth, WiFi, IR, and UHF), and naturally it is compatible with Astera’s ecosystem.

Astera enjoyed a very busy 3 days at the 2024 PLASA event, and LunaBulb was one of the stars of the show for the German headquartered manufacturer that exhibited alongside its UK distributor, Ambersphere Solutions.

Attendees loved its lightweight design, ease of use, and advanced technology, including the DMX control and wide CCT range. Many appreciated the wireless capabilities and all-weather durability.

LunaBulb’s success is the result of a fusion of hard work and invaluable insights from lighting designers, technicians, crews and filmmakers from multiple sectors. Their real-world feedback has helped shape the product into an essential tool for set, lighting and event design.

Astera’s head of product management, Ben Diaz, commented, “The energy at PLASA was fantastic! With a focus on new technologies constantly pushing the boundaries of creative lighting design, Astera enjoyed a great show. It was excellent to be part of an inspiring event that highlighted creativity, collaboration, and the industry’s future.”

He collected the Award together with Astera’s sales director, Sebastian Bückle.

Winning the PLASA Innovation Award means a lot explained Ben. “Firstly, PLASA is an important part of our history as an entertainment industry in the UK and internationally, and many of us grew up discovering entertainment technology by researching new innovations appearing at PLASA London.”

He continues, “This award is great because it is awarded by members of the association with extensive technical knowledge and a genuine understanding of the community and what they are rewarding here is not a purely market-oriented approach but the arrival of a new technology that will make users’ lives much easier and lighting designers’ projects much more attractive.”

Ben added that “special thanks” should go to Astera’s technical director Simon Canins and the entire team for their dedication, commitment and contributions to LunaBulb’s development.

    • Best Human Centric Design: Honoring projects that prioritize human well-being by utilizing lighting solutions that support health, comfort, and productivity through dynamic and adaptive lighting environments.

    • Non-networked Lighting:  Celebrating innovative applications in small or stand-alone spaces.

These new categories align with the growth of technologies, advancements in lighting innovative approaches that are being adopted by the sector.

Another significant change for this year’s Awards is that submissions will no longer be submitted to a specific category. Entries will be reviewed internally by the Awards judges, to assign the entries into a primary category. An assessment will also be made to determine if the entry fits into other relevant categories, allowing the possibility of a single project winning multiple awards.

DALI Alliance is certain that these updates to the awards will enable more submissions from a wider representation of the lighting sector, from emerging professionals to established industry leaders.

Paul Drosihn, general manager of DALI Alliance, said: “We are very excited to launch this year’s DALI Alliance Lighting Awards, especially with a refreshed approach. We are confident these changes will make it more straightforward for those from across the lighting industry to enter, as well as providing more opportunities to get recognition in meaningful categories.

“The awards have already built up an enviable reputation and are highly regarded across the sector. The updates will further increase this, thanks to a more comprehensive evaluation process.

“We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.”

As well as benefiting from the prestigious nature of the awards, winners will have their work promoted and highlighted through the work of DALI Alliance. This will offer excellent exposure and alignment with a credible, authoritative organisation.
